Florida Concealed Carry: What You Need to Know

Florida is a constitutional (permitless) carry state. As of July 1, 2023 (HB 543), any qualifying adult 21 or older who can legally possess a firearm may carry a concealed weapon or firearm in Florida without a permit. As of late September 2025, open carry by law-abiding adults is also lawful in Florida, subject to prohibited locations.

The Concealed Weapon or Firearm License (CWFL) is now optional

Florida still issues the CWFL through the Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services (FDACS). You no longer need it to carry concealed in Florida, but many people still get one because it provides:

  • Reciprocity — a Florida CWFL is honored in roughly 37 other states.
  • Federal Gun-Free School Zones Act exemption (18 U.S.C. 922(q)).
  • A firearm-purchase background-check alternative (NICS-alternative status).

Florida CWFL at a glance

  • Minimum age: 21 (Florida residency is not required — non-residents may apply).
  • Training: not required to carry permitlessly; for the optional CWFL you must demonstrate firearm proficiency through a CWFL-qualifying course.
  • Cost: $97 new ($55 license + $42 fingerprinting); $45 resident renewal.
  • Valid for: 7 years.
  • Processing time: about 30 to 90 days (90-day statutory maximum).
  • Where to apply: FDACS — online, by mail, at an FDACS regional office, or at a participating county tax collector office.
