Know the law
Learn the updates and changes, and get refreshed on the do’s and don’ts of carrying and the use of force in self defense. This is what we are known for.
Satisfy the state requirement
The state of Michigan requires you to spend a minimum of 3 hours reviewing your course material. Be compliant and stay up to date at the same time.
Proof of training
You get a certificate showing you took our CPL renewal course. It demonstrates you went above and beyond to be responsible.
Do not become a felon by accident
Carrying a concealed pistol is a lot of liability. You are expected to know every Michigan carry law and follow it. Forgetting one will not get you a free pass from the police.
Michigan CPL renewal requirements
- Review your CPL course material for at least 3 hours
- Visit a range and complete at least 1 hour of shooting within the 6 months before your renewal application
By submitting your renewal application, you certify that you have completed the 3-hour course review and the 1-hour range practice in the last 6 months. A certificate from a renewal class like ours is not mandatory, but it provides proof that you completed the requirements if it is ever needed. Proof of training is not required by the County Clerk’s Office or the online system during renewal.

How to renew your CPL
- In person: visit your County Clerk’s Office to renew your CPL.
- Online: complete the entire process online with a PIN provided by your County Clerk’s Office. Apply at the CPL Renewal Application Website using the PIN in the renewal notice your county clerk mails 3 to 6 months before your expiration date. Lost your PIN? Contact the County Clerk’s Office or the Michigan State Police CPL Division to request it.
- Cost: $115. You can apply up to 6 months before your CPL expires.

Michigan CPL renewal questions
When and how do I renew my CPL?
You can apply up to 6 months before your CPL expires, at the county clerk or online. The fee is $115. You must certify that you completed at least 3 hours of review of your CPL training and at least 1 hour of range time in the 6 months before you apply.
How much does a Michigan CPL cost?
A new CPL costs $100, paid to the county clerk when you file, plus a $15 fee to whoever takes your fingerprints, so $115 in total. A renewal is $115. Class tuition is separate.
How long is a CPL valid?
A CPL, including a renewal, is valid until your birthday that falls 4 to 5 years after it is issued or renewed.
How long is a Michigan CPL class?
State law requires at least 8 hours of instruction: 5 hours on the classroom topics set by law and at least 3 hours on a firing range, where you fire at least 30 rounds.
How old do you have to be to get a CPL?
You must be 21 to be issued a CPL. You can take the class before you turn 21, because the training certificate counts as long as the class was within 5 years before you apply.
Do I have to take the class in my county?
No. The law does not tie the class to the county you live in. A certificate from a qualifying course is accepted by any county clerk in Michigan.
