How to Purchase a Pistol in Ohio

From a Private Seller or Dealer

Purchaser must be over 18 to buy a handgun or rifle from a private seller in Ohio, and over 21 to buy a handgun from a federally-licensed firearm dealer (FFL).

In the state of Ohio, you can purchase rifles, handguns, and shotguns from any dealership without being required to obtain a permit to purchase.

If you’re a resident from West Virginia, Kentucky, Indiana, Pennsylvania, and Michigan, you can also visit Ohio and purchase a pistol without a permit.

To purchase a handgun, you must be 21 years of age; to purchase a firearm, you must be 18 years of age.

Step 1) Verify that you meet the eligibility requirements of Ohio
Step 2) Find a gun or firearms dealer in Ohio. In Ohio, you can purchase guns from private sellers or firearms dealers with federal licenses.
Step 3) When you finally visit the dealership, bring photo ID with you (ie: driver’s license).
Step 4) You can take your gun or firearm home with you on the day of purchase. There is no mandatory waiting period
